Introduction

Zambia's constitution contains a specification for a postcode system. The system has not been implemented yet so here at Sharp Silicon we decided to explore the specification and see if we could create a solution.

In this system a postcode represents a part of a road. The design of the solution is therefore heavily dependent on a good source of road GeoJSON. We will be splitting roads up according to boundaries created within districts so we will also need a good source of GeoJSON for the districts too.

The specification also requires the development of a national address database. This is technically a much simpler process so we will not cover this in so much detail but present a few options on how it could be done.

In these pages we discuss the parts of the specification and the design of the solution we created. You can see the system in action here
